The Guruvayur Temple located Iin Guruvayur town in Thrissur district of Kerala is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is one of the most visited and sacred pilgrimage places for Hindus from around the world. The deity is Balkrishna, the avatar of Lord Vishnu. The idol of the deity is adorned with four hands each carrying a conch, a mace, a discus and a lotus. The deity is also lovingly referred to as ‘Unnikrishnan.’
The idol of Lord Unnikrishnan at Guruvayur Temple is made out of a rare mixture called Padala Anjanam instead of stone or metal which was the usual norm when such idols were built. The temple is open only to the believers of Hindu faith, and one must expect long queues to enter the temple complex. The temple is at a driving distance of 30 kilometers from the nearby town of Thrissur and buses can be availed every five minutes from Thrissur town to Guruvayur.
