Kuttanad is a region that spreads over Alappuzha and some parts of Kottayam district. It is known as the heart of the backwaters of Kerala. Popularly referred to as the 'rice bowl of Kerala', the region has lush green rice fields that spread magnificently over the horizon. A picture postcard for the real countryside of Kerala, it lies around 2 meters below the main sea level. The land in these lowlands is split up into small and big rivers and creeks. These streams offer tourists a chance to take an idyllic boat ride or a houseboat cruise in these waters.
